Sheldon, Iowa — During their regular January meeting Wednesday evening, the Sheldon Community School Board voted to approve the expulsion of a student.
Sheldon Superintendent Cory Myer had recommended the student’s expulsion for violation of the school district Code Of Conduct. According to school officials, the student’s guardian voluntarily entered into an agreement to waive rights for an expulsion hearing with the Sheldon Community School District Board of Education and accept the consequence of expulsion for the remainder of the 2020-21 school year.
This is the seventh student to be expelled for violating the Code of Conduct. The school board approved the expulsion of five students at their November meeting and another at their December meeting.
Also at Wednesday night’s school board meeting, Superintendent Myer told the board that the District will be receiving additional Elementary and Secondary School Emergency Relief Funds (ESSER II) in the amount of $524,971. These are funds provided by the Federal government to the state of Iowa and are then disseminated to individual school districts by the state. These are pandemic relief funds. Myer told the Board that the District will be receiving additional guidance on allocation requirements in the next few days.
Myer also updated the Board on the electrical issues in the high school building. The December 23rd storm caused a dip in the power coming into the building, which in turn caused some damage to the building’s boiler, as well as some kitchen equipment. Myer updated the Board on his conversations with the District’s insurance agent about coverage for the damage.
