Sheldon Water Department To Change Disinfection Process; Flush Water Mains

Sheldon, Iowa — The City of Sheldon, and in particular, the Sheldon Water Department, is looking forward to the day when the Lewis & Clark Regional Water System will be connected to the Sheldon water system.

Sheldon City Manager Sam Kooiker tells us that they anticipate the Lewis & Clark water will be hooked up in November.

He says in preparation for receiving water from Lewis & Clark, the City of Sheldon will be changing its method of disinfection to chloramination in November 2023. Currently, the Sheldon water is treated with chlorine, and they will be switching to chloramine.

Kooiker says chloramination is a commonly used disinfection process, used by many including the Lewis & Clark Regional Water System. The use of chloramines or other disinfectants is required by EPA drinking water health standards and Iowa Dept. of Natural Resources requirements.

He says the change is intended to benefit customers by reducing the levels of disinfection byproducts in the system while still providing protection from waterborne disease.

Kooiker tells us the switch will not affect most people, except for dialysis patients and owners of any fish, aquatic animals, or reptiles, which absorb water. Click here for more information.

Public Works Director Todd Uhl says City workers will not have to remove the chloramine at the wastewater treatment plant, as chloramine, just like chlorine, will be consumed by the organics in the wastewater stream before the final product is released.

In other news from the Sheldon Water Department, they tell us they will be flushing water mains from 11 p.m. on Wednesday September 27th until 6:00 a.m. on Thursday September 28th, and from 11 p.m. Thursday September 28th until 6 a.m. on Friday September 29th.

Kooiker says there may be some discoloration in the water during and after the flushing process. They ask you to limit the use of water during the flushing process and recommend that you do not wash whites during these timeframes if possible. If you have any questions you can call the City Office at 712-324-4651.
