Sheriff: Osceola County Jail Project Continues; Walls Are Up

Sibley, Iowa — If you’ve recently driven by the Osceola County Courthouse in Sibley, you have noticed a rather large building coming up. That would be the new Osceola County Jail.

We talked to Osceola County Sheriff Kevin Wollmuth about it, and he says, he thought too that the new building seemed big.

He gives us a construction project update.

Wollmuth tells us it’s coming along nicely.

We asked if he had a completion date update for us.

Sheriff Wollmuth tells us the facility will have what’s known as a “Sally Port.” The “Sally” part of the word comes from the Old French word saillie, which means to leap forth. It’s basically similar to an attached garage with both a front and a rear door for loading and unloading suspects and inmates. Wollmuth says if an inmate has a medical issue, they can also drive the ambulance right in, load the inmate patient, and go right out the other door.

He says the new facility is going to be a huge upgrade from what they have now. He gives us a little history.

He says the current facility is the original jail from 1907.
