SHS Students Honor Teacher For Military Service

Sheldon, Iowa — The Sheldon High School Student Leadership Team held an assembly Friday afternoon in the high school auditorium, in part, to honor one of their teachers who recently retired from military service after serving a total of 26 years in the United States Air Force and Air National Guard.

Royd Chambers, who has been a Sheldon High Social Studies teacher since 1994, retired from military service on December 17th. KIWA talked with Chambers after the assembly and heard about his time in the military.

In addition to his full-time teaching duties and his military service, Chambers also served 10 years in the Iowa Legislature.

During Friday afternoon’s assembly where Chambers was honored and thanked for his military service, he spoke to the students about the subject of responsibility.

Although Chambers service in the military has come to an end, he says he is nowhere near ready to retire from his teaching position.

Following Friday afternoon’s assembly, the Student Leadership Team served cake and punch in Chambers’ honor, in the high school commons.
