Sheldon, Iowa — The contractor who completed last year’s 16th Street resurfacing project will be returning to Sheldon this year to correct some mistakes made when they resurfaced it last year.
At Wednesday’s meeting of the Sheldon City Council, Public Works Director Todd Uhl told the council that the road surface on 16th Street was supposed to have a 2% crown, to allow for water to run off into the ditch. However, Uhl reported the contractor had only given the road a 1% crown, allowing puddling in spots on the roadway. Uhl says the contractor will be returning this season to correct that problem, which will include raising the manholes. along with some other issues with the resurfacing.
During the meeting the council approved paying off some $2.65-million in TIF debt some five years early, which will lower the city’s debt load.
In other business, the council granted an underground electric easement for MidAmerican Energy to run a new service line to the Water Treatment Plant. They also gave their final approval to the Ordinance changing the Cemetery rates and another reducing the speed limit on a section of South 2nd Avenue, South of 16th Street, from 45 to 35 miles per hour. The speed limit reduction was requested by Maintainer Corporation, due to the increased traffic entering and leaving their expanding production facilities.
