Orange City, Iowa — The Sioux County Sheriff’s Office recently held its fourth annual essay contest for sixth-grade students.
The grand prize winner is honored by having their essay posted on the Sheriff’s Office website and social media outlets the Sheriff’s Office uses: Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, YouTube and its Sioux County Sheriff App. The winner also receives a tour of the Sheriff’s Office, Sioux County Courthouse along and a patrol vehicle ride‐along with Sheriff’s Office SRO, Deputy Pollema.
The topic of this year’s essay was about being visionary and imaginative. Students were asked to give ideas of what they thought would make their school and the world a better place. The contestants also had to include what they could do or say to help their family, friends, and classmates be the best that they can be.
In March, the submitted essays were reviewed by Sheriff Dan Altena, deputy Pollema, and Mrs. Julie Visscher’s Honors English class of the Boyden‐Hull JR/SR High School.
Pollema, who directed the program said, “This has become a project that we look forward to each year; there were several great essays presented again! The outside‐the‐box thinking from the Spalding Catholic 6th grade students really stood out; they all submitted video essays that really grabbed our attention.”
Bridget McIntyre, a 6th-grade student at Spalding Catholic School was selected as the winner of this year’s essay contest. McIntyre is the daughter of Chad and Alina McIntyre of Alton.
