Spencer Man, Serving Life For Murder, Dies Of COVID

Spencer, Iowa — Officials say an 89-year-old Spencer man serving a life sentence for murder is the 14th state prison inmate to die with COVID.

Harold Duncan of Spencer was convicted in 2004 of the January, 2003 shotgun slaying of his wife, Karen, in the couple’s RV.

According to the Iowa Department of Corrections, Duncan died Tuesday in a prison hospice unit, likely due to complications related to COVID-19 and other medical conditions.

According to court documents, on January 13, 2003, Duncan shot his wife twice, killing her, then attempted to kill himself. He was convicted of 1st Degree Murder by a Clay County jury and sentenced to Life in Prison.
