Spirit Lake Man Charged With Attempted Murder In O’Brien County Pleads Not Guilty

Primghar, Iowa — A Spirit Lake man has pleaded not guilty to attempted murder and felony assault charges in O’Brien County.

Johnathon Oldenkamp of Spirit Lake was arrested on a warrant on December 11th, 2025, related to an alleged incident in May 2025. Oldenkamp was accused of pulling alongside a vehicle traveling westbound on Highway 18 in Hartley and shooting at the vehicle. The driver of that vehicle, Fernando Curiel, was injured but managed to drive himself to the Sanford Sheldon Hospital.

A criminal complaint says Curiel had been Oldenkamp’s supervisor at AMPI and that Oldenkamp had recently been terminated.

When he was arrested in December, Oldenkamp allegedly kicked a deputy and O’Brien County Sheriff Bruce Devereaux. Oldenkamp was additionally charged with two counts of assault on a peace officer in connection with that incident.

At this point, Oldenkamp’s case is scheduled to go on trial on February 3rd.
