UPDATE: Power Restored: Storm Leaves Destruction In Its Wake: Much Of Sheldon Without Power

UPDATE: Shortly after we spoke with Geoff Greenwood, the two circuits he refers to in this story were restored. And shortly after that, crews fixed the third and final circuit.

From the City of Sheldon:

“The July 5 storm was an emergency impacting the entire community and we are re-prioritizing to help with the clean-up. If you can safely move limbs to the right of way (between sidewalk and street), please do so as soon as possible. We will come pick them up. We ask for your patience as there is a lot to clean up. There is also plenty of room at our tree dump on Monroe Ave (north on Washington Ave), and you are encouraged to use that.

Please respect this offer by not putting commercially cut or commercially removed limbs or trees in the right of way. Please also do not put limbs on street corners or on the street as it impacts visibility. An emergency agenda item is being added to today’s City Council meeting for an update.”

From the City of Sanborn:

City Crews are continuing with clean-up today. The focus will be on large trees and branches today (Wednesday) and they will return for smaller item clean-up on Thursday and Friday. To aid with clean-up efforts, if you are able to get downed branches on your yard as close to the curb as possible, it would be greatly appreciated!

Original story:

Sheldon, Iowa — The line of storms that passed through northwest Iowa Tuesday late afternoon and evening left destruction in its wake. Several Sheldon locations are without power at this hour, including the KIWA studios.

The storm hit the Sheldon area hard about 5:45 p.m. We talked with MidAmerican Energy spokesman Geoff Greenwood, who gives us an update as of 7:30 p.m. Tuesday night:

He gives us an estimate of when they hope to have the power back on.

According to information from MidAmerican, there are also isolated outages across northwest Iowa affecting fewer than 100 MidAmerican customers near Sutherland, over 100 but less than 500 in the Sanborn area and rural Sheldon, fewer than 100 customers near Boyden, another outage of that size between Hull and George, one like that in the Rock Valley area, and one like that near Alvord.

Other power companies are also reporting outages. Northwest Rural Electric Cooperative reports 47 Sioux County members without power and 11 in O’Brien County.

Alliant Energy reports 23 customers without power in the Lester area, 229 in the George area, and 6 without power north of Ocheyedan.

O’Brien Emergency Management asks people to please avoid the tree debris on the streets in Sheldon. There are multiple power lines down in Sheldon, and some of the power lines are mixed with tree debris. They say please stay safe. Please avoid traveling down the streets with tree debris.
