Sheldon, Iowa — It’s about this time of year when school children begin looking forward to…….summer vacation. In addition to weeks of summer fun, summer vacation from school is also the time when many children in Sheldon don’t always get the nourishing meals they need. The Sheldon Summer Lunch Program is working to change that.
Summer Lunch Program Director, Tricia Meendering, tells us about the program.
Meendering says the program is hosted at the Sheldon United Methodist Church, but is open to any child in the community.
She says that, while the program feeds the Sheldon school children, it’s about more than just a meal.
Meendering says that, as the end of the school year approaches, it’s time to start lining up volunteers to help with the program.
If you would like to volunteer to help with the Summer Lunch Program, Meendering says you can call her at 712-324-4894, or stop and see her at the Sheldon United Methodist Church.
She says that, in addition to volunteers to help serve, the program needs donations to purchase the food for this summer’s meals.
Meendering stressed that the Sheldon Community Schools Backpack Program and the Summer Lunch Program are not related in any way, and that donations to the Backpack Program do not help fund the Summer Lunch Program. Monetary donations for the Summer Lunch Program may be mailed to:

Meendering says meals are served beginning the first weekday after Sheldon Schools let out for the summer, which, unless we have more snow days this spring, will be June 9th, and they serve each Monday through Friday from 11 am to 1 pm until school starts in August.
