Swanson Pleads “Not Guilty” To Felony Theft By Check

Sheldon, Iowa — A Lakefield, Minnesota woman who is accused of passing fraudulent checks in Sheldon has filed a written arraignment and plea of “not guilty.”

According to O’Brien County Jail records, 26-year old Ashley Jean Swanson of Lakefield, was arrested on a warrant accusing her of Theft in the 2nd Degree, which is a Class “D” Felony.

Sheldon Police say the charge stems from incidents in March of this year, in which Swanson allegedly passed three fraudulent checks, totaling more than $1-thousand, at the Sheldon Hy-Vee store.

Online court records indicate that Swanson had been scheduled for arraignment on Monday, October 23rd, in O’Brien County District Court in Primghar. But since she has entered a plea, the arraignment is not needed.

Judge Nancy Whittenburg has scheduled a pretrial conference for this Friday, October 6th, with a trial scheduled at this point for Tuesday, October 24th.

If she’s convicted of a class D felony, Swanson could face up to five years in prison and a fine of between $750 and $7500, according to Iowa code.
