Ten Orab Musicians To Audition For All-State

Northwest Iowa — High school musicians from around northwest Iowa will gather in Storm Lake Saturday to audition for a position in the most prestigious musical choir, band and orchestra in the state.

The Iowa All-State Band, Choir and Orchestra Concert will be performed at Hilton Coliseum, on the campus of Iowa State University, the weekend before Thanksgiving, but musicians wanting to earn the coveted spots available will be auditioning Saturday.

From Sheldon Community High School, band director Cliff St. Clair tells KIWA that three of his musicians will be auditioning for the All-State Band on Saturday. St. Clair says Orab senior Madeline Goede will be trying to earn a seat in the All-State Band’s clarinet section for the 4th consecutive year. Sheldon Junior Darshan Patel will be making his first attempt at making the All-State Band’s trombone section. Kellen DeKok, a freshman at Sheldon High, will be auditioning for the first time on his Horn in F, more commonly referred to as a french horn.

St. Clair says violinist Lexi Merley, who is a junior at Sheldon High School, will be auditioning for her second appearance in the All-State Orchestra.

Orab choir director Caitlin Hanson will be taking seven of her vocalists to audition in Storm Lake on Saturday. Senior Olivia Lidiak and junior Caroline Badberg will be audtitioning as altos, senior Devin Wolthuizen will be auditioning as a tenor. Four Orab vocalists will be auditioning for the 2017 Iowa All-State Chorus in the Baritone/Bass category.  They are juniors Brian Nilles, Jesse Hickman, and Jonathan Sterk, along with sophomore Jager Roozeboom.

The 2017 northwest Iowa All-State Band, Orchestra and Choir auditions will be held Saturday in Storm Lake.
