The Lost (?) Is Found

Sheldon, Iowa — If recent media reports were to be believed, one of the events planned for this weekend’s Sheldon Celebration Days had apparently been in doubt for a period of time.

The reports would have us believe that the location of the time capsule buried during Sheldon’s centennial celebration back in 1972 had been lost to time, leaving officials without its precise location. However, Wednesday morning, the Sheldon Chamber & Development Corporation issued the following statement:

“We have some great news to share with you today, the Time Capsule from the Centennial Celebration has been located and is in our possession. We are excited to unveil the contents of the time capsule at our Friday Coffee this Friday, September 2nd starting at 9:30 a.m. Please join us at the City Park during this time to enjoy some birthday cake and coffee and take a look at some pieces of history.”

Sheldon Chamber Director Ashley Nordahl says there was apparently some confusion on the part of the reporter who broke the story.

She says there is a plaque that indicated where the time capsule was. She says they just didn’t want to create a mess.

According to Nordahl, she had talked with the reporter about how the nearby City of Sibley had called in a ground radar contractor to help them find the exact location of their capsule, but Nordahl told KIWA that Sheldon actually didn’t have any plans to do that. She said had they not been able to dig up the capsule on Tuesday, the time capsule part of the ceremony may have had to wait. But with the time capsule in-hand, no delay is now needed, and the ceremony, as well as the rest of the Celebration Days and Sesquicentennial events, are on, as planned.
