Sheldon, Iowa — The cleanup of the former home of ThermoCel in Sheldon is progressing nicely, according to Sheldon City Manager Sam Kooiker.
The location, which the city had flagged as a nuisance property, was purchased late last year by MidAmerican Energy Company. At that time the utility announced that they planned to raze the main building, as well as a Quonset hut on the property.
After pumping up to two hundred thousand gallons of water out of the basement of the main building, MidAmerican’s contractors began the demolition, only to discover an active beehive in the Quonset hut. Beekeeping experts were called in and removed the hive this past Thursday, October 8th.
As of earlier this week, Kooiker says demolition of the structures is full-speed ahead and progressing nicely.
The demolition project and removal of debris is expected to be completed in early to mid-November.
The ThermoCel property is located adjacent to Wyman Avenue, just south of the Sheldon Post Office.
