Sheldon, Iowa – Things are returning to something resembling normal in the Sheldon Community Schools after more than a year of adjustments due to COVID.
Superintendent Cory Myer says masks are now recommended rather than mandated, and the schools are returning to some sense of normalcy.
(As above) “That’s really what we’re seeing around the school. Our classrooms are getting back to normal; our extracurricular activities are going on. We just have a ton of kids participating in our spring sports right now, with soccer and track. We’ve just had some kids recognized down at the State FFA Convention. Our student leadership team is doing some neat stuff. They’re actually planning a Dash for a Splash…kind of a color run coming up here Memorial Day Weekend where they’re raising money for families to get pool passes for families in need. We’ve got a Leader in Me…some groups that are doing amazing things. It’s just crazy, all of the activity, all the things that are going on here at school.”
Myer says one of the things from COVID that is set to continue is the free school meals program.
(As above) “We just found out this week that our Free School Meal Program is going to be extended for the 2021-22 school year, so we will provide free school meals the rest of this school year, all summer long, and all year next year, as well. We will be providing free meals to families for next year, which is really exciting news for our families, as everybody tries to get back on their feet from some of the challenges of COVID.”
He says many positive things are happening and talked about one positive event that’s scheduled for next month.
(As above) “On Wednesday, May 12th, we are bringing to town, through our Fellowship of Christian Athletes group…FCA, we call them…FCA is bringing Jon Gordon to town. For people that haven’t heard of Jon Gordon before, go out and Google Jon Gordon. (He’s an) author, motivational speaker, just a phenomenal individual. I have a ton of respect for the guy, I’ve listened to a lot of his podcast stuff, read a lot of his books. And we are just so excited to be able to bring him to Sheldon.”
Myer says there will be three events featuring Gordon during that day.
(As above) “We’re going to partner with SCDC and do a noon luncheon on the 12th, and that will be at 12:00 o’clock. We’re going to do three events, all three at the (Crossroads) Pavilion. The first one will be that noon SCDC luncheon, where Jon will be the keynote speaker there. Then the second one, we’ll actually have him speaking to our staff at 3:00 o’clock in the afternoon. That will be a great opportunity for our staff to learn some messages from Jon about education and that positive message. Then we’ll do an evening event with Jon Gordon. That’s going to be an FCA-sponsored event, at 6:30 out at the (Crossroads) Pavilion.”
Myer says tickets for the evening session, including a catered meal, will be $25 each.
Myer made his comments on Wednesday’s KIWA Morning Show.
