Third Time Turns Out To Be The Charm For Sibley-Ocheyedan VPPEL

Sibley, Iowa — Not all precincts were in favor of raising Sibley-Ocheyedan’s Voted Physical Plant and Equipment Levy to a dollar per thousand — but overall, the measure passed, receiving over a two-thirds majority.

The total was 650 yes votes to 351 no votes. That’s nearly 65 percent yes, to just over 35 percent no.

Absentee ballots were about 70 percent yes votes and 30 percent no.

In the Osceola 1 precinct, which includes most of the southern portion of the school district and a portion of the city of Sibley, the measure only got about 57 percent yes votes.

In the Osceola 2 precinct, which includes a little over half of the northern portion of the Sibley part of the district and some of the city of Sibley, the yes votes were about 76 percent.

In the Osceola County 3 precinct, which includes the northwest corner of the county and the remaining portion of the city of Sibley, the yes votes were about 70 percent.

But in the Ocheyedan part of the district, if the vote had only occurred there, the measure would have been defeated, even by a simple majority, as only about 43 percent of people in that precinct voted yes.

A measure to raise the VPPEL was defeated on two previous occasions, but those times the question had asked the voters if they approved of raising the levy to $1.34 per thousand dollars of valuation. This time, it was only a dollar per thousand.
