Northwest Iowa — This has been Iowa State University Extension and Outreach Week. Iowa’s 100 county extension offices have been hosting activities this week focused on celebrating extension’s presence across the state. And at least two of them were scheduled for our area.
ISU Vice President for Extension and Outreach John Lawrence says extension’s 100 offices enable them to serve as a 99-county campus, connecting the needs of Iowans with Iowa State University research and resources. He says the statewide celebration is one way they say “thank you” to the many volunteers, community leaders, organizations, agencies and other partners who support ISU Extension and Outreach work in Iowa.
Iowa State University Extension has its roots right here in northwest Iowa. In 1903 a group of farmers from Hull asked some researchers to come out from Iowa State and talk with farmers about some new technology — seed corn. Iowa later became the model for cooperative extension work nationwide.
In Osceola County, they had an open house with coffee and rolls this past Tuesday. And this Friday at the Lyon County Extension Office in Rock Rapids, there will be a “Featured Business Friday” where you can have a cup of coffee and talk with extension providers and others. There will also be a drawing for a $25 Chamber gift certificate. It runs from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. this Friday.
