Sheldon, Iowa — If November 2020 has seemed warmer and dryer than November of last year, there’s a reason for that.
November of this year was significantly warmer than last year, with highs equaling previous record highs on three separate days during the month. On November 4th, a high temperature of 75-degrees was recorded at the KIWA Studios. That matched the record that hadn’t been equaled since 1909. The very next day, the mercury topped out at 77, topping the old record of 72, which was last set in 2001 and matched in 2016. Then on November 7th we saw a high of 75 which surpassed the old record high of 73, which had stood since 1931. The 77 degree reading recorded on November 5th of this year was the warmest temperature recorded for November this year and was 22-degrees warmer than the warmest high temperature of November last year. As for average high temperatures, this November we saw an average high temperature of 50-degrees, compared to 39-degrees in November of last year.
November’s coolest recorded temperature was recorded on November 13th when the mercury dipped to a teeth-chattering 1 degree. Even at that, it was 7-degrees warmer than the low temperature of -6 that was recorded on November 7th of 2019. Our average low for this November was 26-degrees, compared to an average low temperature of 20 in November, 2019.
November, 2020 was also drier than the same period last year. Our total November, 2020 precipitation, as recorded at the KIWA Studios in downtown Sheldon, was just 1.06-inches of moisture, compared to 2.07-inches of precipitation during November, 2019. We were even lower in snowfall this November compared to last. 5.25-inches of the white stuff fell on Sheldon during the month just ended, compared to 6.85-inches during November, 2019.
