Northwest Iowa — Northwest Iowa was under a dense fog advisory for most of the day on Thursday. We talked to Trooper Kevin Krull of the Iowa State Patrol and he offered some advice about driving in fog.
Trooper Krull says there’s a time to use your high-beam headlights, but driving in fog is NOT one of those times.
In addition to using your low-beam headlights when driving in foggy conditions, Krull says you should avoid “outdriving” your headlights.
He says you also need to be especially vigilant for wildlife on the roadway.
Trooper Krull says he recently had some first-hand experience with encountering wildlife on the roadway.
To recap, Trooper Krull advises you to use your low-beams, slow down and watch for obstacles in the road ahead when driving in fog. And, he says, be on the lookout for wildlife on the roadway anytime you’re out, especially before sunrise and after sunset. And whatever you do, he says, don’t try to swerve and miss the animal, it’s far more dangerous than hitting it.
