Two New Reserve Police Officers To Hit The Streets Soon

Sheldon, Iowa — Within the next couple of months, Sheldon residents will see a pair of new faces around town in Sheldon Police uniforms.

At their meeting last week the Sheldon City Council approved the hiring of two reserve officers for the police department. Officer Jett Korver is the coordinator of Sheldon’s Reserve Officer program, and he tells KIWA that the addition of the first two reserve officers marks a pair of firsts for the Sheldon Police Department.

We asked Korver where the idea for a reserve program originated.

He says the Reserve Officers will have the same police powers as the department’s full-time officers.

Korver says the reserve program will increase the number of police cars on the street at any one time.

Officer Korver says the additional officers will mean that backup is more readily available.

He says the first of the reserve officers will be sworn in soon.

The reserve officers are required to spend six weekends in training to be certified, but Korver says Meinecke has already certified as a reserve officer.

Officer Korver expressed his thanks to the Sheldon City Council and to Police Chief Lyle Bolkema for making the reserve program a reality.
