Unemployment Rate Drops In June

Statewide Iowa — Iowa Workforce Development says the unemployment rate dropped to 2.6 percent in June, which is down one-tenth of a percent from May.

IWD director Beth Townsend says that number is another milestone.

She says the leisure and hospitality industries saw the largest job gains.

Townsend says there are still near 45,000 thousand Iowans who are looking for work. Townsend says one of the big issues facing employers is workers taking a job and then quitting after a short time.

Townsend says businesses already had been making adjustments to deal with the pandemic, and they are continuing to do so to try to hold onto workers.

Townsend says that has created a lot of situations where people start a job, they dislike it, and quit because there are still numerous employment opportunities available at other places. Townsend says there’s still a lot of work to do, but the trend has been in a good direction.

Iowa’s Labor Force Participation Rate increased to 67.8 percent from 67.6 percent last month.
