Utility Franchise Hearing On Wednesday’s Council Agenda

Sheldon, Iowa — The Sheldon City Council will meet Wednesday June 19th, with the first of several public hearings to be held on the proposed Electric and Gas Franchises with MidAmerican Energy.  If approved by voters, the  franchises could provide the City with $230,000 of new funds annually, generated by the franchise fees charged to MidAmerican’s Sheldon customers. Sheldon city officials say the franchise fees would go a long way toward fulfilling the financial needs of the city’s four emergency services departments.

The council will also hear the third reading of an ordinance that sets new water rates and enacts a change in the notification process and fees for late payment of water bills.

In other business the council will consider the appointment of Tom Eggers as Council representative to the SCDC Board and Wayne Barahona as Council representative to the Pavilion Board. They’re also expected to hear an update on the H.C. Lane Building.  The alley behind the Lane Building has been barricaded since early April when state inspectors found structural deficiencies in the building. The council has indicated that those barricades will remain until an engineer has certified to the council that it is safe to remove them.

The council will also be asked to accept the resignation of Dakota Brown from the EMT/Paramedic Coordinator position, and then approve the appointment of Brown to the SCAT team as part-time/volunteer EMT.

Wednesday’s Council meeting will begin at 4:30 in the upper level of the Sheldon Community Services Center and will be followed by an Open House to honor Sheldon Police Officer Scott De Goei, who will be retiring at the end of June.
