Police say  someone illegally entered the residence at 806 Park Street in Alton, and once inside, put the drain stops in the kitchen sink and turned on the water.  The running water was reportedly not discovered for several days, causing extensive water damage to both the main floor and basement of the structure, which was built by Habitat for Humanity, and was scheduled to be deeded to the new owners later this summer.

According to the Orange City-Alton Police Department, the home sustained between $10-thousand, and $30-thousand worth of damage.  Police say they’ll know a more accurate damage figure after an insurance adjuster inspects the dwelling.

According to the report, authorities are classifying the crime as a burglary, and vandalism.

Police continue to investigate the incident.
