Verizon Customers Experience Outage

Northwest Iowa — Some northwest Iowans reported issues with their Verizon wireless service on Monday morning.

The outage appeared to be related to a nationwide issue for the wireless provider. In a statement on “X,” Verizon stated, “We are aware of an issue impacting service for some customers. Our engineers are engaged and we are working quickly to identify and solve the issue.”

Those who had issues say they ranged from no service at all to not able to send or receive text messages. Some reported that their phones were stuck in “SOS mode,” a mode in which no calls or texts can be sent or received and the phone can only be used to call 911.

DownDetector.com, an online platform that provides users with real-time information about the status of various websites and services reported a peak on Monday morning of over 103,000 reports. The site is limited to the data it collects when people say they have an issue, so the actual number of people experiencing the outage is likely orders of magnitude higher than that. By mid-afternoon, the reports had plateaued at about 48,000.

There has been no update from Verizon on “X” as of mid-afternoon Monday.
