Western Christian Announces Dates For Prom, Commencement

Hull, Iowa — The COVID-19 pandemic has put a myriad of springtime events into limbo, not the least of which are prom and graduation activities for northwest Iowa high schools.

While most schools in the KIWA listening area haven’t yet firmed up plans on how to handle these two spring traditions, Western Christian High School in Hull has announced plans, at least tentatively, for prom and graduation.

According to Wes Fopma, Western’s Director of Development and Promotions, Western Christian High School plans to host a traditional Commencement Ceremony at the school on Tuesday, May 19th at 7:00 pm. Fopma says strict social distancing guidelines and attendance restrictions will allow for safe distancing and crowd flow. In addition to graduates and staff, only the parents of the graduates will be allowed to attend the ceremony. He says the event will be livestreamed so families and friends can participate virtually.

If the May ceremony must be postponed due to local health and safety concerns, or to abide by new restrictions that may arise in the coming days, Fopma says the Commencement Ceremony would be postponed until Tuesday, June 16th at 7:00 pm. He says any decision to postpone the Commencement Ceremony will be made by Tuesday, May 12th.

As for Prom, Fopma says the Administration is working with the Prom Committee to plan an event for Friday, June 12th. He says activities being planned will depend on social distancing guidelines that are in effect.
