Winter Fireworks Season Is Here

Sheldon, Iowa — When one thinks of fireworks, the 4th of July comes to mind, but that’s not the only time of year you can legally explode consumer fireworks in Sheldon.

There is a winter fireworks season, as well, and we are right in the middle of it. According to the Sheldon City Code, consumer fireworks may be exploded in Sheldon from December 17th through January 2nd each winter.

The Sheldon ordinance says that consumer fireworks may be set off between the hours of 12:00 noon and 10:00 pm during those dates, with the exception New Year’s. Then they may be fired off between 12:00 noon on New Year’s Eve until 12:30 am on New Years morning.

Just like summer fireworks season, consumer fireworks must be used on your own property; persons under the age of 18 may only use or explode consumer fireworks when under the direct supervision of his or her parent or guardian; and it is illegal to possess, use or explode consumer fireworks while appearing or determined to be under the influence of alcohol and/or a controlled substance. And the ordinance says that a person shall not possess, use, or explode consumer fireworks in a reckless manner that is likely to cause death, injury, or property damage.

So if you choose to celebrate the holidays with consumer fireworks, please do so in a safe, responsible manner.
