Knowledge Nugget:
Today is Veterans Day. The first celebration using the term Veterans Day occurred in Birmingham, Alabama, in 1947. Raymond Weeks, a World War II veteran, organized “National Veterans Day”, which included a parade and other festivities, to honor all veterans. The event was held on November 11th, which at the time was designated as Armistice Day. The first Armistice Day celebration was held at Buckingham Palace, commencing with King George V hosting a “Banquet in Honor of the President of the French Republic” during the evening hours of November 10, 1919. The first official Armistice Day events were subsequently held in the grounds of Buckingham Palace on the morning of November 11, 1919, which included a two-minute silence as a mark of respect for those who died in the war and those left behind.
