It’s National Hot Cross Bun Day!
Hot cross buns are spiced, sweet yeast rolls marked with a cross on the top. They are traditionally eaten on Good Friday to mark the end of Lent.
A 14th-century monk named Brother Thomas Rockliffe at St. Albans Abbey baked the first recorded version in 1361 to distribute to the poor on Good Friday of that year. Similar crossed breads may date back to ancient pagan practices, honoring spring goddesses in the Egyptian, Greek and Roman cultures.
