It was 260 years ago this month that Harvard students launched what is generally regarded as the first known student protest on an American college campus.
At the time, only seven colleges has been established in the colonies. Fed up with “bad and unwholesome” butter in Harvard’s dining commons, senior Asa Dubar confronted a tutor and, according to a later biblical account, declared: “Our butter stinketh!”
Students subsequently walked out of the dining hall and ate in town. The dispute lasted for weeks with Harvard eventually acknowledging the bad butter, while discipling student leaders. At one point, half the student body was suspended.
