Sioux City, Iowa (KTIV) — The candidates seeking Iowa’s 4th District seat in the U.S. House offered different approaches for lowering fuel prices during a televised debate Wednesday night on KTIV.

Republican Chris McGowan, former president of the Siouxland Chamber of Commerce, said completing the Keystone XL pipeline would have increased oil supplies in the United States.

Democrat Dave Dawson, an assistant Woodbury County attorney, said Congress could take direct action by ending the conflict involving Iran, which he argued has contributed to higher fuel costs.

Both candidates also expressed concern about labor shortages. McGowan said temporary visas remain important for agriculture and other industries, including health care.

Dawson agreed that additional workers are needed to help meet employer demand.

In their closing statements, both candidates thanked one another for running a positive campaign and focusing on issues facing voters.
