(Sen. Chuck Grassley - KIWA Staff Photo)West Des Moines, Iowa (RI) — Sen. Chuck Grassley is urging Iowa Republicans to vote for the GOP candidate for governor for a very specific reason.
Grassley spoke Friday night during a Republican event in West Des Moines.
Grassley made a similar statement in October 2018, when he was 85 years old and Republican Gov. Kim Reynolds was in a close race to win a full term.
Under state law, the governor can make a temporary appointment to the U.S. Senate when a vacancy occurs. The appointee serves until voters select a permanent replacement in the next general election.
Grassley was elected to an eighth term in the Senate in 2022. That term expires Jan. 3rd, 2029.
The last time an Iowa governor filled a U.S. Senate vacancy was in 1936, after Iowa Sen. Richard Murphy was killed in a car accident.
