Northwest Iowa – Four area individuals were inducted into the 2022 Iowa 4-H Hall of Fame during a ceremony at the 4-H Exhibits Building at the Iowa State Fair last weekend.
Cheryl Heronemus has served, guided, and provided leadership to Sioux County for 45 years. She started her career as the Sioux County Youth Coordinator in 1977 for five years. She then moved into the county director position for 27 years. For the last 13 years, Heronemus has served as Regional Director for Region 1 which currently includes Lyon, Osceola, Sioux and O’Brien Counties.
Ninety-eight Iowa counties participated this year and selected 133 inductees for their outstanding service and dedication to 4-H. Inductees or their surviving family members were presented a certificate by the Iowa 4-H Foundation President, Julie McGonegle, and State 4-H Program Leader, Debbie Nistler, as they were introduced on stage.
Earlier, we told you about the O’Brien County inductee, Denny Mars, as well as the Lyon County inductee, Alvin Smidstra.
In addition, Osceola County veterinarian, Dr. Daniel Berkland, was that county’s inductee for 2022. Dr. Berkland has worked as a fair veterinarian, sheep superintendent, workshop presenter, served on the Osceola County Extension Council, helped the Westerners 4-H Club with their projects at Hawkeye Point, and educated the 4-H members and youth about honeybees.
In his role as a sheep superintendent, Dr. Berkland is a part of the Share-A-Sheep program, which allows 4-H and FFA members who do not have experience with sheep to care for and train sheep for show. Dr. Berkland, through the Sibley Veterinary Clinic, purchases animals for each Share-A-Sheep participant and provides feed. He helps put on workshops to prepare the exhibitors for the show.
The Iowa 4-H Hall of Fame was initiated in 2002 to help commemorate the 100th anniversary of 4-H. A summary of previous honorees was on display at the 2022 Iowa State Fair in the 4-H Exhibits Building. These summaries are also available at the Iowa 4-H Foundation office in the Extension 4-H Youth Building at Iowa State University. Information about previous inductees to the Iowa 4-H Hall of Fame is also available on the Iowa 4-H Foundation website.
