Orange City, Iowa — An Alton man will serve prison time after accepting a plea agreement to several charges in Sioux County District Court.
According to the Sioux County Attorney’s Office, 22-year-old Dalton Kade DenHartog Hopcroft was sentenced August 26 for OWI Third Offense, Operating Motor Vehicle Without Owner’s Consent, Assault While Displaying a Dangerous Weapon, and a probation violation for previous OWI and Drug Possession convictions.
The county attorney’s office says that last year, on July 20, DenHartog Hopcroft was placed on probation for OWI – First Offense and Possession of a Controlled Substance -Third Offense. On April 3, 2024, the State filed an application to revoke the probation based upon alleged violations.
On May 22, 2024, Orange City Police were called to a fight outside an apartment complex in which a handgun was displayed. The investigation revealed DenHartog Hopcroft showed a CO2 powered BB gun in a threatening manner during a physical altercation in which the victims believed the gun was real while being threatened to be shot. On June 6, police filed criminal charges which generated a warrant that was served on June 12.
DenHartog Hopcroft was located on June 12 when the Sheldon Police Department filed criminal complaints against him for Theft in the Second Degree and Burglary in the Third Degree – Motor Vehicle. This resulted from an investigation of stolen power tools. An additional O’Brien County charge was filed for Theft in the Fifth Degree, as he was seen on a doorbell surveillance camera removing the camera and taking it. More charges were made June 12 from the Sioux County Sheriff’s Office for OWI – Second Offense, and Driving While Barred, both Aggravated Misdemeanors.
On Monday, August 26, in Sioux County District Court, DenHartog Hopcroft was sentenced pursuant to a plea agreement, where he will serve a five-year prison term for OWI Third Offense, a two-year prison term for Operating Motor Vehicle Without Owner’s Consent, a two-year prison term for Assault While Displaying a Dangerous Weapon, and a previously suspended five-year prison term for OWI – First Offense, and Possession of a Controlled Substance-Third Offense. All sentences shall run concurrent to each other and to the O’Brien County’s prison sentences.
