Change of Venue Granted for Cherokee County Man Accused of Killing Infant Son

Cherokee, Iowa — A Cherokee County man has been given a change of venue for his first-degree murder trial in the death of his infant son.

Back in January, 24-year-old Luis Contrerras-Deciga pleaded not guilty to the 1st Degree Murder charge in the death of his four-month-old son. Contrerras-Deciga waived his right to a speedy trial. The infant was found unresponsive while under the care of Contrerras-Deciga in May 2024, and was later declared brain dead after four days in the hospital. An autopsy revealed the death was a homicide caused by head injuries.

The trial will be moved out of Cherokee County after the approved request with Contrerras-Deciga’s next hearing, which will be held virtually this Friday, March 14th.
