Spirit Lake, Iowa (KUOO) — Officials with the Iowa Department of Natural Resources say the recent 50 and 60 degree weather has quickly taken a toll on the ice and is bringing an early end to the ice fishing season.
DNR officials say in the last two days, a UTV went through the ice on East Lake Okoboji, and a pickup truck broke through to its frame on West Lake Okoboji. Earlier today, a wheel house-style ice fishing shelter also went through on West Lake Okoboji.
Officials say that as of earlier today, the UTV had been retrieved and that the pickup removal was going to happen soon along with the wheel house.
No injuries were reported in any of the incidents.
Open water has been present pretty much all winter on the north side of Big Spirit Lake. Officials say today’s strong wind has been literally pushing it out of other areas of the lake as well. Piles of ice could be seen on the east shoreline of the lake.
