Cleghorn, Iowa (KUOO) — The Iowa Department of Natural Resources is investigating a manure discharge from an open feedlot near Cleghorn in Cherokee County.

The DNR says its Spencer field office received a report Friday morning of manure entering Bear Creek, a tributary of Mill Creek. Agency staff responded to the scene and confirmed the discharge.

According to the DNR, the producer has taken steps to mitigate the release.

Officials collected water samples as part of the investigation and reported that no dead fish were observed.

The DNR is advising downstream users to avoid using water from Bear Creek and Mill Creek until further notice.

The agency adds it will evaluate potential enforcement action after the investigation is complete.
