Northwest Iowa — Maybe we have turned a corner when it comes to wet weather. And that would be a good thing for area fields and farmers.
While much of the grain is ready to harvest, rain and wet fields have kept farmers chomping at the bit to get the combines rolling. In fact, Iowa State University Extension and Outreach Agronomist Leah Ten Napel says some corn and soybean fields are seeing some unusual signs of wet weather.
TenNapel says the purple soybeans are a symptom normally seen in wet weather, but it likely won’t be a huge deal.
She says from what she’s heard, the weather should be improving.
TenNapel also tells us that she knows farmers can’t wait to get in the fields, but she says they should probably wait a while for things to dry out, or they will risk other issues.
She says while not many fields have been harvested, what had been before all the rain looked pretty good. She attributes that to a low number of cases of disease and other issues.
