Flood Damage Didn’t Impact Unemployment

Iowa — Several Iowa cities were swamped with flood waters, but Iowa Workforce Development director Beth Townsend says the flooding didn’t significantly impact unemployment numbers.

The claim numbers didn’t go up after the initial filings.

Townsend says there was the opportunity for some to make claims that normally wouldn’t.

Townsend says the floodwaters did not hit any of the larger cities where there are large concentrations of workers, and that is why unemployment didn’t see the impact.

The latest county-by-county unemployment figures released are for the month of July. Iowa Workforce Development says Sioux County had the lowest non-seasonally-adjusted unemployment in the state in that month, with 2.0 percent.

Lyon County was right next to that number, with 2.1 percent unemployment. Plymouth County was tied with Ida, Carroll, Adams, and Taylor counties with 2.3 percent.

They tell us 2.4 percent unemployment was a popular percentage. Not only did O’Brien and Osceola have 2.4 percent unemployment, but so did Kossuth, Mitchell, Audobon, Marion, and Washington counties.

The July figures for our four counties were all up somewhat. June numbers were 1.7 for Lyon County, 1.8 for Sioux, 2.0 for O’Brien County and 2.1 for Osceola County.
