Full-Fledged Drought Conditions Return To Northwest Iowa

Northwest Iowa (KUOO) — Drought conditions have made a return to a large portion of the region.

The latest U.S. Drought Monitor issued Thursday has pretty much all of northwest Iowa classified as being under moderate drought, with a drought watch now in effect.

The report shows little to no measurable precipitation fell in the region during the entire month of February. There was also very little to no snowpack for the month.

According to Iowa’s drought plan, all drought regions saw conditions deteriorate in February.

The National Weather Service’s Climate Prediction Center’s outlook for the remainder of March is calling for above-average precipitation across all of Iowa. The seasonal outlook, however, suggests continued drought in far northwest Iowa.

Currently, all four of our northwesternmost Iowa counties are in moderate drought, according to the Drought Monitor. In fact, the patch of moderate drought goes as far south as Monona County, and then the line goes northeast all the way to Worth County, where I-35 enters the state from Minnesota.
