Des Moines, Iowa (RI) — The ongoing debate at the statehouse over how to cut property taxes includes a discussion of the gas tax.
A Senate-passed property tax bill includes a mechanism to automatically trigger yearly increases in the gas tax.
Scott Newhard, vice president of the Associated General Contractors of Iowa, says that while the proposal ties those increases to an inflation factor, the annual change would be capped at one cent, and most yearly increases would amount to only a fraction of a cent.
Tyler Raygor is the state director for Americans for Prosperity, a conservative group that opposes triggering a gas tax increase.

The state tax on diesel is 32.5 cents per gallon, and it’s 30 cents per gallon on gasoline. Those rates were set in 2015.
