Hawarden, Iowa — A house and garage were destroyed and the occupants are homeless after a fire on Sunday, January 25, 2026, near Hawarden, but just into South Dakota.
According to Hawarden Fire Chief Payne Allen, at about 11:30 p.m., the Hawarden Fire Department was called to the report of a garage on fire at 30117 484th Street, about a mile west and two miles north of Hawarden.
When they got there, the chief says the fire department saw the garage was destroyed and the house was heavily involved in flame. He says they attempted an interior attack, but the floor had become unstable, so they had to evacuate fire personnel and fight it from the outside.
Allen says no injuries were reported to people, pets, or livestock.
The fire department was assisted by the Ireton, Alcester, and Hudson fire departments.
He says the cause of the fire is under investigation.
Chief Allen reports that both the garage and the house were a total loss.
He says the firefighters who responded were on the scene for about 10 hours.
Allen tells us the occupants are staying with family.
