(KIWA Staff Photo)Statewide Iowa (RI) — Republican US Senate candidate Ashley Hinson says Iowans are paying the cost for Washington’s failures and she’s released a list of ideas for reducing expenses for things like fertilizer, fuel, and prescription drugs.
Hinson’s calling for enforcement of anti-trust laws and prosecution of price gouging by fertilizer companies. Hinson also says federal law should be changed so tax-free 5-29 accounts being used to save for college expenses could also be used for child care expenses. Earlier this week Hinson called for the temporary suspension of the federal tax on gasoline and diesel. Hinson says she’s lobbying House Speaker Mike Johnson to reconvene the House BEFORE the election to vote on measures to ease pump prices.
Hinson, who’s been a member of the US House since 2021, says the House was originally scheduled to be meeting this week and next week anyway and should be there now to take steps to respond to affordability issues. Hinson has opposed House Resolutions to limit President Trump’s authority to continue military action in Iran and Hinson says that’s NOT among the topics the House should be voting on now.
Josh Turek is the Democrat running for Iowa’s US Senate seat. Last week, Turek proposed suspending the federal gas tax as well as an embargo on US-produced diesel. On Friday, Turek spoke with reporters in Des Moines.
Turek says the war in Iran and tariffs have probably hurt Iowa more than any other state.
