(Rep. Ashley Hinson - KIWA Staff Photo)Iowa (RI) — U.S. Senate candidate Ashley Hinson is back in Iowa after a quick trip to Dallas for the first-ever Republican Party convention in the middle of a president’s term.
During his convention speech Wednesday night, President Trump promised a $5,000 check to every adult citizen if Republicans maintain majority control of both the House and Senate after November’s election. Hinson says she’s focused on providing real relief to working families and driving down costs, but she isn’t saying whether she’d vote for Trump’s proposal.
Last year, Trump used Pentagon appropriations to give U.S. service members $1,776 bonuses. During his first term, Congress passed — and Trump signed — two rounds of $1,200 stimulus checks for low- and middle-income Americans during the early months of the pandemic.
Hinson says Republicans already delivered historic tax relief last year through a bill allowing employees who earn tips or work overtime to claim a tax deduction of up to $25,000.
Trump has said he’ll travel the country before the November 3rd election to support 35 Republicans running in competitive House and Senate races. Hinson says she hasn’t spoken with Trump about whether he’ll campaign for her in Iowa.
Hinson spoke with reporters late Thursday morning after touring a child care center in Carlisle. She says the owner hopes to expand but faces regulatory barriers and difficulties securing financing for renovations on a 78-year-old brick building.
Hinson, who has served in the U.S. House since 2021, faces Democrat Josh Turek in this year’s race for one of Iowa’s U.S. Senate seats.
