Des Moines, Iowa (RI) — The Iowa Supreme Court has ruled against a former Dordt University nursing student who claimed he faced religious discrimination after being denied an exemption from a COVID-19 requirement.

Andrew Perry sought a religious exemption from a COVID-19 vaccination requirement before beginning a clinical nursing rotation. After the exemption request was denied, Perry filed suit under the Iowa Civil Rights Act, alleging religious discrimination.

A district court dismissed the case, finding the evidence did not support Perry’s claim that he had a sincerely held religious objection to the vaccine. The court concluded the objection primarily reflected the views of Perry’s parents rather than Perry himself.

In its ruling, the Iowa Supreme Court upheld the district court’s decision, finding the lower court properly evaluated the evidence presented and correctly dismissed the lawsuit.
