West Des Moines, Iowa (RI) — Thousands of volunteers are expected to help package meals for children and families in need during a five-day event that begins Tuesday in West Des Moines.
Chuck Current, executive director at Meals from the Heartland, says the non-profit’s 19th annual Hunger Fight is expected to draw about 3,800 volunteers and produce between 1.75 million and 2 million meals.
The large-scale community event involves extensive planning and logistics to coordinate nearly 4,000 volunteers and many tons of supplies.
Current says the meals packed during the event are expected to provide food for more than 6,700 children for an entire year.
Volunteers typically work about two-hour shifts and receive training when they arrive.
Additional volunteers are still being accepted. Information is available at MealsFromTheHeartland.org.
