(KIWA Staff Photo)Iowa (RI) — It’s Fire Prevention and Safety Week in Iowa, and communities across the state are marking the occasion with events ranging from school education programs to fundraisers and fire truck parades.
Atlantic volunteer firefighter Jake Vetter says one goal this year is educating people about the safe use and disposal of lithium-ion batteries.
Officials recommend taking lithium-ion batteries to designated recycling or collection sites rather than throwing them away in household trash.
Vetter says serving as a volunteer firefighter can be demanding because emergencies can happen at any time, but he says helping his community is worth the sacrifices.
As part of Fire Prevention and Safety Week activities, Atlantic is planning a parade at 6 p.m. Saturday that is expected to feature firefighters and emergency vehicles from throughout the region.
