Lake Park, Iowa (KUOO) — The Harris-Lake Park School Board has approved specifications and bid documents for the demolition of the former elementary school building in Lake Park.

The action came during a special meeting Tuesday afternoon and moves the project into the next phrase of the demolition process.

Before demolition can begin, asbestos remaining in the building must be removed. Superintendent Mike Thompson says abatement work is expected to begin in the coming weeks, with demolition bids scheduled to be opened around the same time that process is completed.

Thompson says the district hopes to have demolition completed and the site seeded by May 14th, 2027.

Once the project is finished, ownership of the property will transfer to the City of Lake Park under an existing agreement.

Thompson says funds for the demolition have already been set aside for that specific purpose.

The district is also working to clear remaining furniture and equipment from the building. Thompson says many items were sold during a public sale last weekend, and another opportunity may be offered for community members to acquire remaining items.

Anyone seeking additional information is encouraged to contact the Harris-Lake Park Community Schools administrative office.
