(KIWA Staff Photo)Paullina, Iowa — A Paullina man has been arrested on burglary charges in Paullina.
A criminal complaint filed by the Paullina Police Department in district court accuses 40-year-old Marcus Washington of taking a firearm from a garage and aiming it at a victim. He is also a convicted felon and is not allowed to possess even legally obtained firearms.
In his statement, the officer says someone reported an individual walking down Broadway in Paullina carrying a rifle. Another person said the subject pointed the rifle at them. Officers responded and after investigating, believe Washington was the one who brandished the rifle. Later the same day, someone in Paullina reported a firearm had been taken from their garage, and they had video evidence, which implicated Washington in the crime.
Washington was charged with second-degree burglary, a class C felony; and dominion or control of a firearm by a felon, a class D felony. If convicted of the class C charge, Washington could face up to ten years in prison, with a sentence of five years if convicted of the class D charge. He also faces misdemeanor counts of assault while displaying a dangerous weapon and violation of a no-contact order.
A preliminary hearing has been scheduled for Friday, September 25th.
Washington was booked into the O’Brien County Jail in Primghar, and was released three days later, after posting bond.
