(KIWA Staff Photo)Coralville, Iowa (RI) — The Iowa Department of Transportation is looking to hire more than 500 seasonal snowplow operators for the coming winter, and a recruitment event is underway this Wednesday afternoon in Coralville, with more events scheduled over the next few weeks.
Craig Bargfrede, the DOT’s winter operations administrator, says the agency has 100 state maintenance garages and hopes to fill multiple positions at nearly all of them.
He says snowplow operators play a vital role in keeping roads safe and communities connected during winter weather, and the pay is competitive.
It’s seasonal work, and there’s no way of predict how often operators will be called in.
Driving a DOT snowplow can be demanding, but Bargfrede says it also brings a sense of pride.
Recruitment events are being held at DOT maintenance garages statewide, all running from 3 to 5:30 p.m. Upcoming dates include:
- September 22nd — Charles City
- September 28th — Council Bluffs
- September 29th — Sioux City
- October 1st — Iowa Falls
