Orange City, Iowa — Sioux County authorities are warning the public about a new phone scam targeting local residents and their families.
The Sioux County Sheriff’s Office says scammers are impersonating sheriff’s deputies and calling family members of people recently booked into the Sioux County Jail. The callers tell families that their loved one can be released early due to jail capacity issues, but they demand immediate payment for an ankle monitor to secure that release.
Deputies say the calls often come from private or spoofed phone numbers to look legitimate.
The Sheriff’s Office emphasizes that officers will never call residents to request or collect money for bail, fines, fees, or monitoring equipment.
If you receive a call fitting this description:
- Hang up immediately.
- Do not provide personal or financial information.
- Do not send money under any circumstances.
